Many men who struggle with sex addiction share similarities: poorly developed personal relationships and a disconnection from their feelings. Male sex addicts often confuse or substitute sexual acting out with emotional intimacy. Furthermore, they are often not connected to a social group in which they can explore and develop safe and healthy male-to-male relationships. In this group, the men grow and heal as a result of the therapeutic interventions, the shared sense of accountability, and the transparent and supportive relationships.
Group therapy and individual therapy are among the most effective treatment modalities for sex addiction. Typically, group therapy is provided in conjunction with other therapies. Although there are similarities, group therapy is not the same as a 12-Step group.

Sex addiction treatment begins with a thoughtful, sensitive, and thorough assessment. From the assessment, treatment options are recommended. For sex addicts who are not in need of inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment programs, individual, couples counseling and/or group therapy are often recommended.
